Review of "What A Year It Was! 1947," by Beverly Cohen

Review of

What A Year It Was! 1947, by Beverly Cohen ISBN 0922658056

Five out of five stars

This is an interesting collection of news snippets that gives the reader a look back at the events of 1947. It also provides insight into the social mindset of that time in history. One of the interesting points is how the polite word for a black person in that time is marked with an asterisk with a footnote explaining how that was the word used at that time.

The snippets are categorized starting from politics and world events and ending with sports. It was interesting to note that the only two baseball teams featured were the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants. Even though the New York Yankees won the World Series. Ads for popular consumer products also appear on a regular basis.

This is very much a browsing book rather than an in-depth read. It is one of those books where you can open it to any page and find an interesting factoid. The Second World War was just over, and a prostrate Europe was just starting to rebuild, and the Cold War was just starting.
