a Slim Waistline by Pearl Barrett and Serene Allison

In a world of
fad diets where one says leave out one type of food while emphasizing others
while different diets reverse what is considered good and bad, the book being
described in this summary is a breath of fresh air. Their approach is based on
their religion and is summarized in one of the opening sentences, “Since God
made all foods, not a single food group should be off limits.” The basic
premise is moderation.
The summary of
key takeaways three through six is that a person should eat suitable levels of
carbs, fat and proteins, for our bodies need all three. While I have never been
on a diet where calories were counted, I do know many that have been and they
found it to be a frustrating and unsustainable tactic. Therefore, what might be
the best point of advice in this summary and the book is in key takeaway nine.
“Calorie and carb counting isn’t recommended, as it
takes the joy out of eating. However, paying attention to portion size of all
foods is important.”
Relying on portion size is another way to limit the
caloric intake, yet it does not rely on computation of anything other than the
weight of a serving.
Another
refreshing characteristic of the book that one can see from the summary is that
the authors avoid the “rah-rah this is wonderful” tone. That approach appears
in so many self-help books that it is an overplayed tactic.
There are enough
positive features of the book expressed in this summary that it can be
considered a positive recommendation.
