Review of
Infographic of Key Takeaways From the book Putin Country, by Anne Garrels
One out of five stars
This
infographic consists of ten slides, each of which contains a simple image, a
brief headline and then one or two short sentences. The structure and the
volume are both far too simplistic and small to give the reader any real
understanding of the reasons why Putin rose to and remains in power. There is
also not enough to explain the fundamentals of the book.
There is
nothing about the background of the Russian state with the history of
autocratic rule and how Putin is just a continuation of this tradition. Mention
is made of the single city of Chelyabinsk and how support for Putin is stronger
there than in other areas of Russia.
Russia is the
largest country in the world by land mass, covering eleven time zones, one
short of being halfway around the world. It is also the heir to the former
superpower of the Soviet Union and ethnically diverse. Therefore, nothing this
short can give the reader even the slightest understanding of how Vladimir
Putin is viewed in Russia. Or the historical dynamics of Russia and the wars
that have fed the paranoia regarding the threats of encirclement and invasion.
