Review of
Bill
Stern’s Sports Quiz Book, by Bill Stern
Four out of five stars
Published in
1950 and with questions from eight major sports, this book poses a real
challenge to the contemporary sports fan. In many ways it is a primer on the
history of the eight sports, which are baseball, football, basketball, boxing,
golf, tennis, track and field, and horse racing.
The format is a
series of ten question quizzes based on a specific subject. For example, there
are quizzes about Ty Cobb, Cy Young, nicknames, slang terms and colleges of
famous stars. Answers are given at the back of the book.
While some of
the questions are not difficult, some of the quizzes will almost certainly
require Google searches. For example, “Who managed the Boston Braves in their
pennant-winning season of 1914?” This is definitely a primer on the history of
sports before the year it was published.
