Review of
Instaread Summary of Miller’s Valley A Novel by Anna Quindlen
Three out of five stars
This is a
convoluted novel about an extremely dysfunctional family that lives in fictional
Miller’s Valley, an area prone to periodic flooding. One of the constants in
their lives is the sound of the sump pump as it removes the water and keeps the
house dry. The flooding is so persistent that the government has plans to
create a reservoir and flood the valley and the towns in it out of existence. Although
the people object, underneath it all it is clear that it would be for the best.
While waiting
for the town to drown, many of the main characters are doing so in stages.
There seems to be little joy or happy times in the novel, their lives are as
damp as their environment. The summary is dull and given the plot as described,
it seems almost certain that the book is as well. All of the main characters
just seem to stumble from one problem to another.
This summary
did succeed in one sense, I was convinced that I have no interest at all in
reading the summarized book.
