Review of
The
‘Nam Volume 1, No. 14
Five out of five stars
It is March 1967 and the featured platoon of combat
troops is in Vietnam. The story opens with the men in their barracks setting up
a sound system so that they can rock to some vinyl. A new, very hard-nosed and
arrogant platoon leader arrives and promises the men that they are now led by
the best there is. This story follows the men through a field action where one
of them is seriously wounded and is evacuated by helicopter.
However, the
most interesting and entertaining aspect of the book is the sub-stories told by
one of the men. In the first, he explains how the picking up of cigarette butts
by a Nazi agent almost led to an allied defeat. Their boredom in digging and
filling bags is relieved by another story, where a soldier broke down an M-16
in order to mail it home to his wife. Her response was not what the soldier
expected.
There is some
combat, a fairly standard Vietnam tale of an American unit entering an isolated
village and meeting opposition. If the other issues of this comic series have
the same format with the sub-stpries, they all are worth acquiring and reading.
