Review of
Instaread Summary of Hillary’s America The Secret History of the Democratic Party by
Dinesh D’Souza
Four out of five stars
It is clear,
starting with the title, that D’Souza’s book is a collection of nonsense. The
phrase “secret history of the Democratic Party” is the opening line in a
massive collection of wildly partisan falsehoods. This summary is weak in that
the author does not engage in sufficient critical analysis of even the wilder
claims.
The opening
line of the summary is an excellent synopsis of the book.
“Hillary’s
America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party is a history of the
Democratic Party, which author Dinesh D’Souza argues is the source of all evil
and iniquity in American history.”
Note the absolute with the use of “all.” Only people
completely ignorant of the history of the United States would ever utter or
believe such a claim. The author of the summary never mounts any strong
response to what is absurd.
Another
ridiculous historical absolute appears
“The real conflict during the Civil War was not
between the North and the South but between the Democrats, including northern
Democrats, and the new Republican party of virtue and good, led by Abraham
Lincoln.”
This is the
most simplistic explanation of the American Civil War that I have ever read.
The list of causes of the war is long and based on everything from economic
issues and the rise of the industrial state to farming practices to social
factors such as religious beliefs based on the people that originally settled
in the different states. Again, there is no strong response from the author of
the summary to this simplistic view of history.
The author of
the summary does take D’Souza to task in the “Author’s Perspective” section, as
can be seen from the following segment.
“In Hillary’s America, D’Souza makes no effort to be
balanced or even to engage seriously with opposing views. He views Democrats as
always and everywhere doing evil and Republicans as always and everywhere doing
good.”
Anyone reading
this summary that has any commitment to the truth will be turned off by the
book as well as the author. History is only secret when you are allowed to make
up your own.
