Word Origins From Webster’s New International Dictionary
Five out of five stars
Nearly everyone
enjoys learning about the origins of words, it is generally a process of one or
more words being combined over time or a single word morphing as it is used
across cultures. This book describes how many words, some common and others
less so, were created/adapted/modified from pre-existing words.
It is also
puzzling on occasion how a word can start out meaning one thing and then over
time be transformed into meaning something largely different. In most cases,
the modern meaning is at least partially related to the original usage.
This is a fun
book to read, nothing is very heavy or profound and most of the words are commonly
used. Making it a literary book that all
readers can understand.
