Review of
Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo’s Beemore Breakthru by Oneeka Williams ISBN 9781684010165

Five out of five stars
This is a great science book disguised as a very good children’s book. The story opens with the Dynamo clan baking cookies that look like honey bees. The conversation turns to the massive dying of bees in what is known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). In order to explain why there is a need to worry, the role of bees in the production of food and other flowering plants is described.
The structure of the bee colony, from the queen to the classes of female workers to the largely useless drones is explained. How honey is produced by the bees is interesting and will likely elicit a few “Yucks” from the young readers.
The solution to the problem of the bees dying is where the book truly becomes a book for children. It is absurd, there is little science in how they are saved. Nevertheless, this is a book that will teach readers at roughly the level of the third grade all about bees, how their colonies are organized and the value they bring to humans and the rest of the ecosystem.
