Review of "The Monkees Comic Book, December 1967"

Review of
The Monkees Comic Book, December 1967

Five out of five stars
This comic mimics the action in the television show, rapid fire non-sequiturs where only a short time is spent on each topic. Dialog and action are zany, where there seems to be only a vague point to be made in the creation of a coherent story.
Yet, there are many references that require knowledge of history and literature to understand. There is a cameo by a Baron von Richthooper, a reference to a classic scene in “Hamlet,” a reference to the Trojan Horse, a caption featuring Galileo Galilei discussing the Solar System and another with Washington crossing the Delaware. These are higher-level jokes, worthy of an adult publication.
Pathfinders in many ways, The Monkees were far more than a rock band, they were the vanguard of dramatic changes in the structure of entertainment.
