Review of
The
Monkees Comic Book, December 1967
Five out of five stars
This comic
mimics the action in the television show, rapid fire non-sequiturs where only a
short time is spent on each topic. Dialog and action are zany, where there
seems to be only a vague point to be made in the creation of a coherent story.
Yet, there are
many references that require knowledge of history and literature to understand.
There is a cameo by a Baron von Richthooper, a reference to a classic scene in “Hamlet,”
a reference to the Trojan Horse, a caption featuring Galileo Galilei discussing
the Solar System and another with Washington crossing the Delaware. These are
higher-level jokes, worthy of an adult publication.
Pathfinders in
many ways, The Monkees were far more than a rock band, they were the vanguard
of dramatic changes in the structure of entertainment.
